On 3rd of December on the Stara Apteka stage, the play Darkness Shrouds the Earth, directed by Tomasz Fryzeł, will be staged with English subtitles.
This is a fantastic opportunity for foreigners and all theater lovers who would like to enjoy these outstanding performances without language barriers.
“If I could pray, I would pray for his death” – says young Dominican friar Diego about the Great Inquisitor Tomas Torquemada, who is at the gates of the city Villa-Réal. In the friary, where dread looms in every corner, the inquisition will carry out its duty. Here, in this place, a confrontation will occur that will change the lives of each and one of them.
The adaptation of 1957 novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski is a study of human relations, motivations, and desires of people in power, hierarchy, and the ever-present ideology. The creators of the play pay special attention to those characters’ traits that are small and intimate, and therefore universal and relatable. In their interpretation, it is not exactly a history of the inquisition but a story about everyday fear, conformity, courage, temptations of power, and rebellion.
We kindly inform that the play features intense, red light.
The play has been entered into the 10th Contest for Staging of Old Works of Polish and European Literature “Living Classics” (Konkurs na Inscenizację Dawnych Dzieł Literatury Polskiej I Europejskiej „Klasyka Żywa”)
Duration: 1 hour and 50 minutes without an intermission
